Halfway Through Baseball Season...

Who has been the best Pitcher in Baseball? Who has been the best hitter in Baseball? How about the best team in Baseball? Here are my picks.

BEST PITCHER
BRANDON WEBB,ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

Brandon Webb, the 2006 National League Cy Young Award Winner, continues to pitch like an Ace for the Diamondbacks. Webb leads the Majors with 12 wins, and he has just a 3.21 ERA. The secret to Webb is that his sinker is his best pitch. The sinker is meant to produce a lot of ground ball outs, and Webb does that often. While Webb has shined, his team has not. The Diamondbacks lost to the Marlins, putting them right at the .500 mark. With Arizona stagnating, and Joe Torre's LA Dodgers just 2.5 games back of Arizona, with the Colorado Rockies, last season's National League Champions, trying to rediscover last season's magic, and San Francisco being carried by the young phenoms of Noah Lowry and Tim Linsecum, Arizona had better watch their back, because the rest of the NL West isn't far behind them.

BEST HITTER
CHIPPER JONES,ATLANTA BRAVES

Chipper Jones is just a few points shy of batting .400 here before the All Star Break. Chipper has also hit 16 homeruns and driven in 46 Runs. Chipper and Mark Texiera have kept the Braves in competition with the Florida Marlins for the NL East Lead. Chipper may take his .394 average to Yankee Stadium, as Chipper may start for the National League in Next Tuesday's All Star Game, if his quad injury isn't too serious.

BEST TEAM
TOO CLOSE TO CALL!

The Tampa Bay Rays again have the best winning percentage in Baseball. The Boston Red Sox became the first team to 50 wins, and the Chicago Cubs and Anaheim Angels are neck and neck with a .598 winning percentage. For the Rays, Red Sox and Cubs to increase their World Series Chances, they need to get above .500 on the road. Watching the Red Sox and Cubs on the road, they both did not play well at home. For the Cubs, there's no excuse. They're still in their home city and they get swept on the South Side of Chicago. Say what you want about Ozzie Guillen, he knows how to get his players to win. He knows how to motivate his players. Ozzie is a World Series Winning Manager, something the Cubs only dream they could have.

BEST SUCCESS STORY
JOSH HAMILTON, TEXAS RANGERS

Josh Hamilton, no doubt has been the best success story in Baseball in 2008. Due to Drug addictions, From 2002 until 2006, Hamilton did not play baseball at all.
Hamilton was a Rule 5 pick of the Cubs in the 2006 draft. Hamilton was then traded to the Cincinnati Reds for cash. Hamilton became a great story in 2007, his first full season in Baseball. Hamilton was traded from the Reds to the Rangers for Edison Volquez, who is among the league leaders in strikeouts and ERA. Hamilton has given up his addiction and has rediscovered his God-Given talent. Hamilton has hit 19 homeruns at the All Star Break for Texas, as many as he hit all of last season with Cincinnati. Josh Hamilton will continue his storybook season at Yankee Stadium, as Hamilton will be the starting Centerfielder for the American League at the All Star Game.

I'LL BE ON THE ROAD THIS WEEK.
Hopefully, I'll be near a computer soon so I can update this blog soon, as I'll be on the road all this week.

Shawn Chacon Released

From PA Sportsticker:

"The Houston Astros released righthander Shawn Chacon on Thursday, one day after he was suspended for initiating a physical altercation, which included confronting general manager Ed Wade and throwing him to the ground.

If Chacon clears waivers, he will be released without pay, Wade said during a news conference at Minute Maid Park. The waiver period extends through Monday. Chacon signed a one-year contract with the Astros in the offseason.

“His defiance of the manager, the pitching coach, me, and especially the organization led us to this decision,” Wade said.

Chacon was suspended indefinitely on Wednesday for insubordination to the club. The one-time All-Star recently voiced his displeasure about being removed from the rotation Sunday after struggling in June, a month in which he was 0-3 with a 9.35 ERA in four starts.

However, according to the Houston Chronicle, Chacon’s frustration spilled over, three days after his initial tirade upon learning of his demotion.

While Chacon, 30, was eating in the lunch room after batting practice, manager Cecil Cooper asked the pitcher to join him and Wade in his office. After refusing Cooper’s request, Wade sat down next to him to try to once again convince the righthander to join them.

The exchange became heated when Wade began to yell at the pitcher, saying that Chacon needed “to (expletive) look in the mirror.”

It was then when the confrontation turned physical.

“So, at that point, I lost my cool and I grabbed him by the neck and threw him to the ground,” Chacon said. “I jumped on top of him because, at that point, I wanted to beat his (butt). Words were exchanged.”

Players quickly intervened to separate Wade and Chacon, who remembers being pulled away by backup outfielder Reggie Abercrombie.

“Maybe it shouldn’t have happened,” Chacon told the paper. “But when you do those things and you’re yelling at somebody and you’re cussing, you better know what type of person you’re dealing with. If there’s any regret, I just wish they had just let me alone. I wish they had left me alone.”

Chacon is 2-3 with a 5.04 ERA in 15 starts for the Astros in 2008. He is 45-61 with a 4.99 ERA in 269 career appearances - 134 starts - over eight seasons with the Colorado Rockies, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates and Astros."

This looks like one situation where cooler heads may have worked for both sides. Chacon is a well traveled-Journeyman Pitcher, and somebody needing a starter in the rotation will pick him up.

Switch-Hitter Meets Ambidextrous Switch-Pitcher

One Thing I've Always wondered: What would happen if a Switch Pitcher was to meet a Switch Hitter?

Before I give you the answer, here's some history on Pat Venditte:

"His Father noticed Pat's ambidexterity when Pat Jr. was three years old, and encouraged vigorous ambidextrous athletic training throughout Pat Jr.'s childhood. Toward this end, the Venditte backyard included astroturf, a batting cage, a radar gun, and a pitching machine. In addition to training both arms from a young age, Pat Jr. practiced punting footballs with both legs in order to establish the leg motion needed when pitching with each arm"

Cubs Have Offensive Onslaught In Game Two of "Crosstown Showdown"

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Cubs own the best record in the majors and it sure looks as if they’re the top team in their own town, too.

Jim Edmonds homered twice, Mike Fontenot went deep and Aramis Ramirez added a three-run shot, all during a nine-run fourth inning Saturday that helped the Cubs beat the White Sox 11-7 to win for the second straight day in the meeting of first-place teams.

The Cubs hit back-to-back homers twice in the fourth inning—the second straight day they’ve hit consecutive homers against their city rivals—and finished with 15 hits. They’ve now won 13 straight at Wrigley Field, where they are 31-8 this season.

Carlos Zambrano To Miss Next Three Starts

Carlos Zambrano will miss his next three starts after being put on the 15 day Disabled List by the Chicago Cubs.

The move is in response to a minor strain in his right shoulder. Zambrano left after throwing his 101st pitch in Tampa on Wednesday due to shoulder pain.

Also, Eric Patterson, the younger brother of former Cubs outfielder Corey Patterson, was sent back up to the Cubs.

Obviously, the loss of Zambrano hurts, as the Cubs not only lose a great pitcher, but the best Hitting Pitcher in Baseball! Hopefully whoever they call up to replace Big Z in the rotation (Sean Marshall, probably) will be able to hold down the fort until Big Z returns.

Game Two of the "Crosstown Showdown" is today. Go Cubs!

Cubs Win Game One Of "Crosstown Showdown" 4-3

A Great Video was made about the Cubs comeback yesterday. Check It Out Below!

With The White Sox up 3-1, Derrek Lee hit a solo homerun off Octavio Dotel making the game 3-2. Aramis Ramirez comes up and hits another solo homerun, to tie the game at three. Then, in the bottom of the ninth, with Ramirez leading off, Ramirez hits the game winning homerun out to the deepest part of Wrigley Field off Scott Linebrink.

Battle Of The Windy City Starts This Weekend With Both Teams In First Place!

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
CHICAGO (AP)—In the Second City, the buzz is all about first place.

The Cubs are on top. So are the White Sox. And starting Friday, they play each other six times in 10 days.

Somehow, maybe, this could a preview of a Windy City World Series. Just imagine fans of the teams who don’t exactly love one another jamming the Red Line train that runs the eight miles between Wrigley Field and U.S. Cellular Field.

The last all-Chicago World Series saw the White Sox, known as the “Hitless Wonders,” beat the favored Cubs four games to two, after the Cubs went 116-36 during the regular season of 1906.

Two years later, the Cubs won the World Series and haven’t captured one since, a 100-year stretch of futility that White Sox fans are quick to point out when there’s a debate over who’s the best team in town.

The White Sox, meanwhile, ended an 88-year drought of their own by winning the World Series in 2005, an accomplishment that apparently didn’t impress some Cubs’ backers.

“It’s so different. You might as well build a border, a Great Wall of China on Madison (Ave.) because we are so different,” White Sox general manager Ken Williams said this week in an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times. “We might as well be in two different cities.

“The unfortunate thing for me is that it’s a shame that a certain segment of Chicago refused to enjoy a baseball championship brought to their city. The only thing I can say is `Happy anniversary.”’

When they meet Friday at Wrigley Field, it will mark the latest date both teams have been in first since Sept. 9, 2003. The Cubs won the NL Central that season before falling apart in the NLCS and losing to Florida after being five outs away from the World Series. The White Sox finished second to Minnesota in the AL Central.

And since interleague play started in 1997, it’s the first time the White Sox and Cubs will meet as first-place teams at the start of the series.

“It’s great for the fans, it really is. It’s great for the city,” Cubs manger Lou Piniella said of the series, which he managed in for the first time a year ago, winning five of six. “Both teams have played well this year, which adds to it. We look forward to the challenge of facing them.”

Even though the Cubs have the home-field advantage for the first three games — and they are 29-8 at Wrigley Field this season—they could be the wearier team Friday.

While the White Sox wrapped up a three-game series Thursday afternoon at home against the Pirates, the Cubs had to play a night game in St. Petersburg, Fla., before Friday’s 1:20 p.m. series opener at Wrigley Field.

“I’m going to talk to a few people in Tampa and make sure they delay that plane until 7 a.m,” White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. “You never have an advantage against the Cubs in Wrigley Field.”

In the past, Guillen has expressed his dislike for the Cubs’ home ballpark. He was especially unhappy one season when he was forced to park in a fast-food restaurant lot across the street from the stadium.

Guillen’s major complaints have been Wrigley’s small and cramped visitor’s clubhouse and a long twisting tunnel to get to the field. He was in a foul mood last year when his team played on the North Side, calling up a radio talk show from his car on the way to the park and unleashing a profanity-filled tirade after the host questioned why A.J. Pierzynski wasn’t in the starting lineup.

And emotions do surge during the series as players on both sides feel the rush of a playoff-like atmosphere where fans are roaring on every pitch.

“You learn the whole situation of how passionate the fans really are here in Chicago. Both teams are in first. It adds even more excitement,” White Sox third baseman Joe Crede said.

“Both teams could be in last place and there will still be brawls and all that stuff,” said White Sox outfielder Brian Anderson, who drew a suspension two years ago when a melee ensued after then-Cubs catcher Michael Barrett punched Pierzynski after a collision at the plate.

Both teams will be less than full strength.

The White Sox are without first baseman Paul Konerko, who has 14 career homers against the Cubs, but is on the disabled list.

Cubs star Alfonso Soriano, who homered in three straight games against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular last season, is also sidelined. And Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano—who was not scheduled to pitch this weekend—had to leave his start Wednesday night with a sore shoulder.

So far, the series is about even as it gets. It’s tied at 30-30 and each team is 16-14 on its home field.

“When you see the enthusiasm in the street and the people in the stands you get pumped up,” Guillen said. “I don’t care what you’re doing or saying. You get into it.”

Willie Randolph Disappointed By Firing

Stark: Mets Mishandle Firing Of Willie Randolph

Willie Randolph Fired As Mets Manager

From The AP:
"ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)—After weeks of speculation that his job was in jeopardy, Willie Randolph finally got fired by the New York Mets while most fans were sleeping.

Randolph was let go in the middle of the night Tuesday, 2 1/2 months into a disappointing season that has followed the team’s colossal collapse last September.

Bench coach Jerry Manuel takes over on an interim basis for Randolph, who led the Mets to within one win of the 2006 World Series. They got off to a strong start again last year but plummeted down the stretch and have been unable to rebound.

A preseason favorite to win the NL pennant, the $138 million Mets (34-35) had won two in a row when Randolph was dismissed early Tuesday morning—making him the first big league manager to get fired this season.

Pitching coach Rick Peterson and first base coach Tom Nieto also were cut loose in an enormous overhaul that was revealed in a fact-of-the-matter news release at a stunning time—about 12:15 a.m. PDT, nearly two hours after New York’s 9-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Ken Oberkfell, the club’s manager at Triple-A New Orleans, and Dan Warthen, pitching coach for the Zephyrs, will join the major league staff along with Luis Aguayo, a Mets field coordinator.

A message left for general manager Omar Minaya was not immediately returned. The Mets said Minaya and Manuel would be available to reporters at Angel Stadium at 2 p.m. PDT on Tuesday.

Reached by phone nearly three hours after Monday’s game, Mets utility man Marlon Anderson said he didn’t know that Randolph had been fired and he didn’t want to comment until he heard the news from a member of the team.

“Not tonight,” Anderson said.

It was a frustrating end for the 53-year-old Randolph, who was set to be an NL coach at the All-Star game at Yankee Stadium next month.

Signed through the 2009 season, Randolph won’t be able to move with the Mets into new Citi Field next year, either. He was slated to earn $2 million this season and is owed $2.25 million in 2009.

Now, the 54-year-old Manuel takes over a squad that still has playoff aspirations. "

Finally, the Soap Opera between Willie And Omar Is Over. You sorta have to feel a little bad for Willie, though. He Won't be at the All Star Game as a Coach, and he won't be managing inside the brand new Citi Field.

Hopefully the Mets and their fans will give Jerry Manuel a chance, more of a chance than they gave Willie.

Rick Peterson got the boot as Pitching Coach. Will we see an improvement in the Mets Rotation?

Why do you get rid of a First Base Coach? If they were going to get rid of a base coach, I thought it would have been the Third Base Coach.

Monday, June 16, 2008

Willie Randolph May Not Last The Week

Willie Randolph is skating on thin ice in New York Right Now.

The Fans In New York Are Getting Antsy. The Soap Opera of Mets General Manager Omar Minaya to decide whether or not to get rid of Willie Randolph. The Mets keep underacheiving and losing, and Willie may not be the only one to get the shaft.

The Mets should just end this Soap Opera and let a decsision on Willie be known. Not just for the sake of the fans, but for the players to (if Willie is fired) turn the page and say "Okay. There's a new guy in charge. Let's go start winning again."

Jerry Manuel might take over as interim manager if Willie is fired.

MLB pushes to put instant replay in use by August

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Instant replay might be coming to Major League Baseball in an instant.

Moving faster than expected and coming after a rash of blown calls, baseball wants to put replay into effect by August for home run disputes in hopes of fine-tuning the system by the playoffs.

MLB and the umpires’ union need to reach agreement before replay can be tried, and the sides have started talking. Previously, it was thought replay would get its first look in the Arizona Fall League and then the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

“The game needs it and I think it does need it soon,” Chicago Cubs pitcher Jon Lieber said Friday before a game at Toronto. “With technology the way it is today, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be a part of the game.”

Jimmie Lee Solomon, MLB’s executive vice president for baseball operations, is pushing for replay by Aug. 1; Rob Manfred, MLB’s executive vice president of labor relations, suggested Aug. 15.

“It’s all still premature,” MLB spokesman Rich Levin said Friday. “A final decision has not been made.”

USA Today first reported on its Web site Friday that baseball planned to use replay this season, saying MLB wanted it by Aug. 1.

“I don’t think it’s needed at all, to be honest,” Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Friday. “How many times do you see players make errors? Baseball has talked about speeding up the game. It’s all you hear. All of a sudden, they want instant replay? You’re going to have slower games and more restless people in the stands.”

Commissioner Bud Selig will ultimately decide when MLB wants to put replay in place. A staunch opponent in the past, a spate of missed boundary calls— fair or foul, over the fence or not—last month left Selig leaning toward its limited use.

The NFL, NBA, NHL, some NCAA sports and major tennis tournaments all employ replay in various forms.

A person briefed on MLB’s preliminary plan told The Associated Press that baseball wants to create an NHL-style “war room” in New York where video feeds would be reviewed by a supervisor. The umpire crew chief wouldn’t see replays— instead, the supervisor would describe what he saw, but leave it up to the umpire to make the final call.

It was not certain whether managers, umpires or the video supervisor would ask for a replay, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because negotiations were in progress.

Last month, after Carlos Delgado of the New York Mets and Alex Rodriguez of the New York lost home runs because of missed calls, umpires said they were open for discussion.

“We’d be all in favor of listening to whatever proposals they might have,” veteran ump John Hirschbeck, president of the World Umpires Association, said then.

Umpires, however, remain adamant that they do not want replay used to review close plays on the bases or ball-and-strike calls.

“I think the umpires do a good job on it. If they would like some additional help, I would find nothing wrong with it,” Baltimore hitting coach Terry Crowley said Friday night before the Orioles played Pittsburgh. “Every once in a while they get one wrong, but I would bet they get 99 out of 100 right, probably more.”

Last November, general managers voted 25-5 to try replay on boundary calls. At the time, Selig took the recommendation under advisement.

Selig, like many of the game’s traditionalists, always liked the human element of baseball, and that meant tolerating an occasional wrong call by an umpire. He also worried about further bogging down a sport that has been criticized for its slow pace.

Count Pittsburgh outfielder Jason Michaels in that corner.

“Here’s the thing: I guess I’m old school, but I think human error is part of the game,” he said. “It’s always been that way. I would think I’d be against it.”

In recent years, the new and cozy ballparks have made it more difficult for umpires with their quirky dimensions, odd angles and yellow lines that denote home runs.

“We’re putting these umps in a very difficult position making a call that is already challenging just because of the dynamic of the play,” Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said before the Rockies played at the Chicago White Sox. “We live in a technological society right now that we can get it right. The guy at home sees it right. That for me is where it really gets confusing. You can sit in your chair at home and make the right call, but the man getting paid who’s the expert is put in a box where you don’t know.”

AP Sports Writers David Ginsburg in Baltimore and Andrew Seligman in Chicago and AP freelance writer Ian Harrison in Toronto contributed to this report.

Flip Saunders Fired As Pistons Coach: Lineup Changes Coming

Flip Saunders is already out of Detroit. Will Rasheed Wallace Be Next

After Joe Dumars Fired Flip Saunders, he then publicly told his players they were all available to be traded.

Dumars publicly put his entire lineup on the trading block, less than a week after the Pistons lost in the Eastern Conference finals for the third straight year.

Among those available: four players who have been together since winning the 2004 NBA title together, plus another starter who just finished his fourth season with the team.

Flip Saunders signed a four-year contract worth up to $26 million three years ago. His deal came less than a day after Detroit finalized terms of Larry Brown's $7 million severance package after he helped the Pistons win a title and almost repeat in his two seasons.

Probably the most intriguing scenario wil be if Rasheed Wallace gets traded. Will the new coach adopt a whole different style of play? Who will stay and who will go? There's a lot of questions for the Pistons right now.

Why The Lack Of Attention For Manny's 500th Homerun?

Click On The Video Below To See Manny Ramirez's 500th Career Homerun. Hurry! It's only a matter of time before MLB Advanced Media will file a copyright claim and take the video down!

On Sunday May 31st, Manny Ramirez finally hit his 500th career homerun. He hit on a first pitch fastball from Chad Bradford. Manny Ramirez joins Ted Williams as the Only Red Sox with 500 Career Homeruns.

Manny hit another one to add to his homerun total. Manny now has 501 career homeruns.

I really wish there would be more attention for Manny's Milestone. Many don't like the way he plays, but I just call it "Manny Being Manny."

I know that Rafael Palmeiro, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and Barry Bonds will, to many fans, have asterisks next to their name, and whether or not they were juicing or not is debatable and will be debatable for years. Manny's always had a lot of power, and he has to have a lot of power, as he routinely hits balls over that 37 foot tall "Green Monster" at Fenway Park.

Congratulations to Manny Ramirez for hitting his 500th career homerun.

Ken Griffey Jr About To Hit 600 Homeruns: Why Isn't There More Attention?

Ken Griffey Jr yesterday hit his 599th Career homerun against the Atlanta Braves, moving him one homerun away from joining the 600 club. While That was supposed to be the highlight of the day, it wasn't. Jay Bruce, the Uber-talented young outfielder for the Reds, hit his first career homerun, a Walkoff Homerun. Bruce said that was his first walkoff homerun...Ever!

Griffey Is About to reach the plateau of 600 homeruns, joining Sammy Sosa, Willie Mays, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and Barry Bonds as the only players with 600 homeruns. Why isn't there more attention being given to the milestone?

It's not like Griffey was involved in any thing steroid related. Griffey has battled injuries for years, for him to get to 600 homeruns, that should be a huge deal right now. The Reds have finally struck the jackpot with young talent, why isn't more attention being given to them?

As I Type this, the Reds are one game below .500 and 7.5 games behind the NL Central and Major League Leading Chicago Cubs. The Reds have a fantastic young pitching staff. Johnny Cueto is among the NL Leaders in Strikeouts. Edinson Volquez leads the Majors In Earned Run Average! And Let's remember this is in Great American Ballpark, not a Pitcher's Park by any stretch of the imagination!

The Reds have always been among the lead leaders in offense. They have old sluggers like Griffey Jr and Adam Dunn. They have new sluggers like Brandon Phillips, Joey Votto, and Jay Bruce.

The Reds have a manager in Dusty Baker who was close to taking the San Francisco Giants to a World Series Titile in 2002. He was close again in 2003 as he managed the Chicago Cubs to an 89-73 record and had them five outs away from their first World Series Appearance Since 1945. It's not like Dusty's a bad manager. In 2005-2006 injuries to key stars kept the Cubs away from competing. Dusty was run out of The Windy City in 2007, was a broadcaster for ESPN for one season, before managing the Cincinnatti Reds this season.

It looks right now like Chicago is about to run away with the NL Central Title, but it's just June 1st. There's a whole lot of baseball left to be played. If there was one team in the NL Central that could make a huge surge after the All Star Break and make a run at the Cubbies, the Reds would be that team.

Every other team in the NL Central has flaws that are holding them back. The only thing holding the Reds back so far this season is Dusty Baker asking Brandon Phillips and Adam Dunn to bunt with two strikes, only to hit walkoff homeruns!

I Don't get why the Reds and Griffey don't get more attention.

They're too good to be ignored.
