Soriano powers Cubs to sixth straight win
BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Alfonso Soriano homered and drove in three runs Saturday to help the Chicago Cubs beat the Colorado Rockies 5-4 for their sixth straight win.
The NL Central-leading Cubs improved to 25-8 at Wrigley Field this season and handed the Rockies their sixth straight loss.
With the wind blowing out at 14 mph and gusting up to 20 mph, balls again had a jet stream to ride over the fence. The teams combined for seven homers Friday—four by Chicago and three by Colorado—and four more went out Saturday, three by the Rockies.
Ryan Dempster (7-2) lasted five innings and struggled with his command, but got the win, giving up three hits and three runs with four walks and a hit batter.

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Jim Edmonds and Mark DeRosa delivered key hits and the Chicago Cubs overcame an eight-run deficit, rallying past the Colorado Rockies 10-9 Friday for their fifth straight victory.
With the wind blowing out at 15 mph, the hitters ruled at Wrigley Field. There were seven total home runs, and Jeff Baker hit a team-record four doubles for the Rockies.
Down 8-0 in the fourth inning still trailing 9-1 in the sixth, the Cubs came back and sent Colorado to its fifth loss in a row.
DeRosa and Henry Blanco hit two-run homers and Edmonds had a two-run double during a six-run burst in the seventh that put Chicago ahead.
Edmonds earlier hit his first home run since joining the Cubs this month. He finished with three hits and atoned for an error in center field.
DeRosa's go-ahead shot off reliever Manny Corpas was the Cubs' fourth homer of the afternoon. Todd Helton, Chris Iannetta and Jeff Spilborghs homered for the Rockies.
Scott Eyre (2-0) got the win by getting the final out of the seventh inning. Kerry Wood pitched the ninth for his 13th save in 17 chances.
Aaron Cook and Corpas (0-3) couldn't hold the lead for the defending NL champions, now last in the West.
Coming off a four-hit, complete game win over the Mets, Cook was in control until the sixth when Kosuke Fukudome and Edmonds hit consecutive home runs that made it 9-4.
Blanco's first homer since Sept. 22, 2006, pulled the Cubs closer in the seventh. Cook went 6 1-3 innings, allowing 10 hits and leaving after giving up a single to Micah Hoffpauir.
Blanco and Hoffpauir entered the game in a sixth-inning double switch and were pivotal in the rally.
Corpas gave up a single to Fukudome before Edmonds' made it 9-8. DeRosa then homered to left-center, his fifth of the season, and sending the crowd of 39,686 into a frenzy.
Cubs starter Ted Lilly gave up eight hits and seven runs in three innings in his shortest outing of the season. Outscored 14-4 in the first inning of their previous six games, the Rockies took a 4-0 lead with Helton's three-run homer the big hit.
Baker, who entered the game in an 0-for-13 slump that had dropped his average to .188, had doubles in the first, third, fifth and seventh innings.
Edmonds and left fielder Alfonso Soriano appeared to have some confusion over who would take Garrett Atkins' high fly in the third, and Edmonds dropped it for a two-base error. One out later, Iannetta homered for a 6-0 cushion.
Baker hit his second double and scored on Omar Quintanilla's RBI single through the box for a 7-0 lead in the third.
Spilborghs homered off Jon Lieber in the fourth. Quintanilla had another RBI single to score Baker in the fifth.
DeRosa had a bases-loaded sacrifice fly for the Cubs in the fourth.
Notes:@ Edmonds began the season with San Diego, was cut and joined the Cubs on May 15. ... Helton's first four homers were all solo and all came at Coors Field. ... Cubs starters Aramis Ramirez and Ryan Theriot were out of the starting lineup for rest. ... Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild missed the game for a family obligation and bullpen coach Lester Strode handled his responsibilities.

Carlos Zambrano Has Cubs Fans Believing
Carlos Zambrano has been getting it done with his pitching AND batting.
Carlos Zambrano is coming off a four-hit game against Pittsburgh, and he is now batting .343. Onto the more important aspect, his pitching: Zambrano is 7-1 this year, and is 4-0 at Wrigley Field with a 2.60 ERA in seven starts. Many times, Alfonso Soriano's only baserunner has been Carlos Zambrano.
Zambrano's impressive backstop, Catcher Geovanny Soto, is currently leading the votes to be the starting National League Catcher. He would be the first rookie catcher to ever start an All Star Game for the National League.
In The Outfield, Alfonso Soriano and Kosuke Fukudome are the leading votegetters. I Think Soriano is getting much love from Yankee Fans who still consider him to be more of a "True Yankee" than Alex Rodriguez.
Fukudome is getting lots of love from Japan, just like Hideki Matsui, and Dausuke Mastuzaka.
Tonight the Dodgers play the Cubs on ESPN2. Carlos Zambrano takes his 7-1 record against Derek Lowe of the Dodgers.

Check Out Who Has The Best Record In Baseball? The Tampa Bay Rays!
Evan Longoria and B.J. Upton have reason to be excited.
Can You Believe It? Check Out the Baseball Standings. Who's First in the American League East? Not the Yankees or the Red Sox, but The Tampa Bay Rays. Who's first in the Major Leagues? Not Arizona. Not New York, but Tampa Bay.
The Tampa Bay Rays, have a fantastic Ace in Scott Kazmir. Kazmir still makes Mets Fans Groan, as he was infamously traded along with minor league pitcher Joselo Diaz to the Devil Rays on July 30, 2004 for Victor Zambrano and Bartolomé Fortunato. This trade was, and still is, widely criticized by the New York media and fan base given Kazmir's following success. Kazmir was in the All Star Game in 2006, and then in 2007, Kazmir led the American League in Strikeouts.
Offensively, Carlos Pena finished the 2007 season with a .282 batting average, 46 home runs and 121 RBIs. His batting average, home runs, and RBIs were career highs.
Defensively, the Rays have Third Baseman Evan Longoria, who is one of the best players in baseball. The Rays were smart to sign him to a long term contract, as he will be a star for years to come.
The Rays also have signed Troy Percival, the star closer for the Anaheim Angels in the 2002 World Series. Percival looks like he is back to the closer of old.
The Devil Rays have never had more than a seventy win season and have never finished above fourth place in the AL East. They may be well on their way to shattering both records.

Does Major League Baseball Need Instant Replay?
Carlos Delgado's Blown Homerun call Sunday Night has reignited the debate for Replay In Baseball.
This Is My Baseball Topic For today: Does Major League Baseball Need Instant Replay? According to ESPN.Com:
"Major League Baseball is making tentative plans to experiment with instant replay in the Arizona Fall League, according to a baseball official with knowledge of those discussions.
If that experiment proves practical and successful, MLB then is likely to continue the experiment next March during the World Baseball Classic and spring training games.
If no insurmountable problems arise, baseball could begin using replay -- though only to decide home run calls -- as soon as next season."
The lack of Instant Replay not only screws the players, but it screws the fans who suffer with agony at the unjust actions of a blind umpire. Instant Replay would fix this.
How should Major League Baseball Use Instant Replay? Homeruns Is a good start, but I also want to see it used for "fair/foul" or "catch/trap ball" as well.
Here is two examples from this season of why Major League Baseball should use replays for catch/trap ball:
From April 5,2008: Braves Vs Mets: From Braves.Com:
"With the bases loaded and one out, third-base umpire Bruce Dreckman ruled that a diving Mark Kotsay caught Jose Reyes' sinking liner in shallow center. Immediately, Kotsay threw the ball back to the infield to seemingly retire Angel Pagan, who had raced to third base without tagging and even momentarily passed Ryan Church, who didn't advance after seeing Dreckman's out call.
After short consultation, the umpires reversed the call, gave Reyes his RBI single and advanced each of the runners one base. Cox conceded the right call was made and indicated the first umpire error prevented him from arguing about the fact that Pagan had passed Church."
Here Are Two Examples of Major League Baseball Needing Replay for a Homerun:
On Sunday night, umpires at Yankee Stadium reversed their correct call and concluded a shot by Carlos Delgado of the Mets was foul.
A night later, umpires in Houston mistakenly ruled a ball hit by the Cubs' Geovany Soto off a center-field wall was in play when it should have been a home run. Soto turned the hit into a three run inside-the-park home run anyway.
And on Wednesday night, a ball hit by Alex Rodriguez that struck a stairway beyond the outfield fence and bounced back into the outfield was ruled a double when it should have been a home run.
If You're Going to take steroids away from the players, then at least give glasses to the umpires!
Manchester United Wins UEFA Champions League Final
Christiano Ronaldo and Frank Lampard each scored in the first half to tie the game at 1-1. It would remain tied until both teams went into Penalty Kicks to determine the winner!
The UEFA Champions League Final is, What I Like to call "The Super Bowl of the Other Side of the Pond." For American Fans, that was the equivalent of the Super Bowl going into overtime. I was glad to see Sir Alex Ferguson (The George Steinbrenner of the English Premier League) get another Champions League Win.

Speaking Of Astros-Cubs..
Check Out This Amazing Running Uphill Catch By Jim Edmonds against the Astros Last Night!
The Cubs had some pretty cool plays in this game. The First Great Play was the three run-inside the park homerun by Geovany Soto. The Call Was Blown, that should have been a homerun, but it was very impressive to watch Soto, a guy with just one triple this season, circle the bases!
The Cubs Won 7-2.

Jon Lester Throws No Hitter Vesus Kansas City Royals
Jon Lester Has Survived Cancer, Pitched in Game Four Of A World Series, and Now Lester has thrown a no-hitter.
Lester had nine strikeouts and walked just two men as Boston Beat Up on The Kansas City Royals 7-0.
The No Hitter would never have happened had it not been for a fantastic diving catch by Jacoby Ellsbury in the fourth inning.
Jason Varitek was behind the plate for this game. Varitek has now caught a record four no hitters. Vartitek caught no hitters from Hideo Nomo, Derek Lowe, Clay Bucholz, and Jon Lester.
Varitek took control of this game and did a great job of commanding pitches and location to Jon Lester.
I Watched the ninth inning on ESPN. They cut into the Astros-Cubs game to show the ninth. I thought Lester was in trouble when he gave up the leadoff walk, but two groundouts later, we all knew Lester was on the verge of doing something amazing.
Speaking of something amazing, I saw Kerry Wood's 20 Strikeout Game against The Astros from 1998 on ESPN Classic before the start of the Astros-Cubs game on ESPN. Both Wood and Lester has great stuff that night. Who had the better night, Wood Or Lester? I Couldn't tell you, but I enjoyed watching both of these fantastic pitching performances.

Welcome To The North Side, Jim Edmonds!
The Chicago Cubs signed former Cardinals and Padres Outfielder Jim Edmonds to a low risk, minimum contract. The Signing of Edmonds meant the Cubs sent struggling Center Fielder Felix Pie to Triple-A Iowa to work on his swing and fundamentals.
The Cubs will now platoon Reed Johnson and Jim Edmonds. The Cubs believe Edmonds tried to come back too quickly from his calf injury.
This move also means the Cubs have added another Left Handed Bat in the outfield. Kosuke Fukudome and Jim Edmonds are both Left Handed Hitters. Let's not forget that Edmonds is an Eight Time Gold Glove Winner and has earned the nickname "The Human Highlight Reel" due to his fantastic catches he has made.
I Can't Wait to see the reaction from Cardinals fans when the Cubs and Cardinals play each other again.

New indictment against Home Run King Barry Bonds unsealed
SAN FRANCISCO(AP)—Federal prosecutors have filed a new indictment against Barry Bonds, charging the home run king with 14 counts of lying to a grand jury and one count of obstruction when he denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs.
Bonds originally was charged with four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice last Nov. 15, but U.S. District Judge Susan Illston ordered prosecutors on Feb. 29 to rework the indictment so that each charge alleged only one lie rather than lumping several alleged falsehoods into single counts.
The new indictment doesn’t add any new alleged falsehoods.
The case against Bonds is still built on whether he lied when he told the grand jury that his personal trainer Greg Anderson never supplied him with steroids and human growth hormone.

Suprise Conductor For "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" During Cubs-Diamondbacks Game Sunday
Check It Out! It's Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Tony Romo!
Tony Romo has a unique predicament being from his part of Wisconsin. I guess he wasn't close enough to cheer for The Brewers.
I sympathize with Tony because I have the same predicament as he does. I am a diehard Cubs Fan (Being At Wrigley was Amazing) and I also love the Dallas Cowboys. Same thing as Tony Romo.
Hopefully Tony Romo watches the Cubs win the World Series while I watch Romo win the Super Bowl one of these years. That would be sweet!

Hopefully Tony Romo watches the Cubs win the World Series while I watch Romo win the Super Bowl one of these years. That would be sweet!

Rick Carlisle, Mike D'Antoni Reportedly Coaching New Teams Next Season
Rick Carlsile will reportedly be the next coach of the Mavericks, while Mike D'Antoni will repotredly coach the New York Knicks.
From the AP:
"Rick Carlisle will be the new coach of the Dallas Mavericks, a decision expected for nearly a week but slowed by contract negotiations.
The papers aren’t signed yet, but team owner Mark Cuban confirmed in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Friday night that a verbal deal is in place"
This From ESPN.Com:
"The New York Knicks have agreed in principle with Mike D'Antoni to become the next coach, the team said Saturday. A news conference will be scheduled upon the completion of the contract.
The former Phoenix Suns coach, who was also sought by the Chicago Bulls, has accepted a four-year, $24 million deal to take over the Knicks. ESPN's Stephen A. Smith reported Saturday morning the terms of the contract, which will make D'Antoni the league's third-highest-paid coach based on annual salary."
The heat for the Suns trading away Shawn Marion for Shaq was too much for D'Antoni, so he reportedly has left the Suns Kitchen. Rick Carlisle is a coach who took both Detroit and Indiana into the playoffs, and he will be expected to do the same for the Mavericks.

Tenth Anniversary Of Kerry Wood's Twenty Strikeout Game
Click on the video to see SportsCenter Highlights of Kerry Wood's Major League record of 20 strikeouts against the Houston Astros.
A much-hyped prospect in the minor leagues, Kerry Wood made his MLB debut on April 12, 1998. He wasted no time showing the world his talent when - in only his fifth career start on May 6, 1998 - he threw a one-hit, no walk, 20-strikeout shutout against the Houston Astros, tying the record for strikeouts in a 9-inning National League game and breaking Bill Gullickson's single-game rookie record of 18 strikeouts in 1980.
Kerry Wood finished the 1998 season with a 13-6 record, and despite missing the last month of the season with elbow soreness easily won the National League Rookie of the Year award. Wood pitched one game in the playoffs against the Atlanta Braves, but suffered the loss. That would be his last appearance in a Cubs uniform for more than a year.
What a Difference Ten Years Makes! Kerry Wood has gone from Rookie Of The Year Starter to closer for the Cubs. Wood has three blown saves so far this season, but Lou Pinella will stick with Wood as Closer. That video of Wood's pitching performance ten years ago today was amazing.
1998 was an amazing year for baseball. Not just in the McGwire-Sosa Homeun Chase, but the young Fireballing Texan who looked like a young Nolan Ryan, Kerry Wood.

Stars eliminate Sharks with 4OT victory
By The Associated Press
The Dallas Stars have finally made it back to the Western Conference finals. It took the eighth longest game in NHL history to do it.
Brenden Morrow scored a power play goal 9:03 into the fourth overtime by deflecting a pass from Stephane Robidas as the Stars eliminated the pesky San Jose Sharks 2-1 in a game that ended early Monday morning - the longest game in the NHL playoffs this season, and the longest in San Jose history.
"Robie made a good, heads-up play, faked the defender down and I was there for an easy one. I shouldn't miss that one," said Morrow, the Stars captain. "At that point of the game, you don't really know what you've got left."
The Stars are going to the conference finals for the first time since 2000, when they returned to the Stanley Cup finals the year after winning the franchise's only championship. They play Game 1 on Thursday night in Detroit, which wrapped up its second-round sweep of Colorado on Thursday night.
After winning the first three games in the series, the Stars finally knocked out the Sharks on the third try and avoided having to go to San Jose for another game. The win came after having two apparent goals by Morrow disallowed following video reviews in Game 5, and Evgeni Nabokov's sensational glove save early in the first overtime of Game 6 - well before midnight.
It was the fourth overtime game in the series, and the fifth game decided by one goal.
"This whole series was a coin flip," Sharks center Jeremy Roenick said.
The deciding game lasted 5 hours, 14 minutes - ending the third-longest in Stars history. They lost the other two, but Morrow made sure that didn't happen again with his seventh goal of the playoffs.
"That was as fitting as anything I've every seen in sports, that Brenden Morrow got the game-winner," coach Dave Tippett said. "It's been a long time since I've seen somebody have a series like that. That's him taking the team on his back and carrying us. Turco was great too."
Marty Turco had a franchise-record 61 saves for the Stars. Nabokov stopped 53 shots, but not the one set up after Brian Campbell was called for tripping Loui Eriksson close to the Dallas net.
"You're trying to battle for a puck. From my point, he started flopping," Campbell said. "I can't do much about it."
Coach Ron Wilson didn't dispute the call.
"Well, it was tripping," Wilson said. "It was a trip, we had to kill it off, and we didn't."
San Jose thought it had a game-winner midway through the third overtime, with Ryane Clowe poking a puck around Turco. Clowe and nearby teammates wearily lifted their arms, but the puck was under the goalie's glove and not in the net. The Sharks even had a power play in the third overtime when Nicklas Grossman was called for hooking, but couldn't convert.
Nabokov's incredible glove save 1:31 into the first overtime kept the game going and prevented a series winner by Brad Richards.
Nabokov made a stab of Richards' one-timer, grabbing the puck with his glove sweeping just inside the post and the puck above the goal line. Referee Tim Peel was behind the net and quickly waved off the goal even though the red light lit up. The play was reviewed by off-ice officials, who determined the puck didn't completely cross the goal line.
Mike Ribeiro had three chances to score in the final 75 seconds of the first overtime. He was rejected on a pair of bang-bang attempts, then with 47 seconds left had another shot that deflected off Nabokov and then the crossbar.
Turco was sprawling out of the crease when he stopped two shots by Sharks captain Patrick Marleau with just over 8 minutes left in the first overtime.
"It's nice to be on this side of it for once," Turco said. "We've had some long ones before. But none of them was more memorable than this one. It was 99 percent fun tonight."
San Jose played in overtime without Milan Michalek, who was face down on the ice when regulation ended after taking a hard hit from Morrow. Michalek, who scored the go-ahead goal in Game 4, had to be helped off the ice and never returned to the bench. He was later shown on TV leaving the locker room with his left arm in a sling.
"We have nothing to hang our heads in shame about. We showed character and kept going," Wilson said. "We were down a player, played overtime without him - a full game with a short bench. Our guys kept going and going and going. We had a ton of chances."
Wilson refused to discuss the injury, saying "it's irrelevant" since the season is over.
After some spectacular saves by Turco, he appeared off-guard when the Sharks got even 1-1 only 1:39 into the third period. Craig Rivet knocked down the puck in the right circle, then Clowe spun and knocked it toward the net. The puck skirted the inside of the right post and went in for Clowe's fifth goal of the playoffs.
At the end of the second period, three Sharks were swarming near the net when Turco pushed away a shot by Jonathan Cheechoo with his stick. That came about a minute after his pad save on a shot by Tomas Plihal.
Antti Miettinen scored on a rebound 4:49 into the second period to give Dallas a 1-0 lead.
Sergei Zubov took a shot that ricocheted off Nabokov, who then collided with Niklas Hagman. There was no whistle, and Nabokov lost his stick in a desperate dive to his right trying to stop Miettinen's putback.
Turco got a break soon after that, when a shot by Pavelski from the side slid through the crease between the posts and the goalie on his back.
Notes
The previous longest game this postseason was Game 4 of the Eastern Conference series between Philadelphia and Washington that lasted 86 minutes, 40 seconds. ... Stars C Stu Barnes missed his third straight game since taking a hard hit to the head in Game 3 on Tuesday night. ... Zubov was in his 108th playoff games for Dallas, the third most in team history behind Mike Modano (167) and Neal Broten (115).
Ozzie Guillen: "We Get No (Bleeping) Respect"
Ozzie Guillen paid homage to Lee Elia over the weekend by having his own blowup that required bleeps to be heard on National Sports Shows. Here is the skinny of it from ESPN.com
"Guillen unleashed his verbal wrath before the White Sox faced the Blue Jays in Toronto, after having been asked a humorous question about a minor leaguer's recent performance and his chance at cracking the White Sox lineup.
That apparently was all it took. Guillen's profanity-laden stream of consciousness touched on Cubs fans, White Sox fans, the media, Lee Elia, and himself.
"Right now everyone in Chicago is making lineups -- 'Call up this guy, call up that guy.' ... If we had 50 people allowed on the roster, we could do that. That's what ticks me off about Chicago fans and Chicago media: They forget pretty quickly. A couple of days ago we were the [bleeping] best [stuff] in town. Now we're [bleep]," Guillen said to the aforementioned Chicago media before the game.
Guillen observed that Chicago still loved the Cubs, even though they have not won a World Series since 1908, but the White Sox -- winners of the 2005 World Series -- did not receive the same affectionate support.
"We won it a couple years ago, and we're horse[bleep]," Guillen said, according to the Chicago Tribune. "The Cubs haven't won in [100] years, and they're the [bleeping] best. [Bleep] it, we're good. [Bleep] everybody. We're horse[bleep], and we're going to be horse[bleep] the rest of our lives, no matter how many World Series we win.
"We are the [bleep] of Chicago. We're the Chicago [bleep]. We have the worst owner [Jerry Reinsdorf]. The guy's got seven [bleeping] rings, and he's the [bleeping] horse[bleep] owner."
Guillen brought up Elia, the former Cubs manager who blew his gasket over what he considered to be ungrateful, unforgiving and unsupportive Cubs fans in an infamous tirade that recently marked its 25th anniversary.
"How about the Cubs celebrating that Lee Elia bull[bleep]? How many times do I curse people out? I will make a lot of money with my [stuff]. I have to keep going because in the future Ozzie will need money, and I can say, 'Here, give me money, here's the 10-year anniversary of my time I called [Jay] Mariotti stuff and the time I went on the radio and cursed out Mike North,'" Guillen said."
The thing I like about Ozzie Guillen is that he calls it as he sees it. I don't agree with everything he's said or done, but this blowup by Guillen was classic. Even though I am a Cubs Fan, I think Ozzie's right. The White Sox won the World Series in 2005 by Sweeping away The Houston Astros, and they still are treated like, in his words, horse(bleep)
Ozzie also said The White Sox Will always "be horse(bleep) No Matter how many World Series We Win." Again, he was right. Guillen knows this because he played on the South Side of Chicago and had to hear about how The Cubs ruled and White Sox Drooled. Guess What? Nothing's Changed.
The White Sox have the same fortune as the Mets as being the Second Team in a Baseball Market. The only difference between their crosstown rivals is the number of World Series Championships Since 1917.
