Curt Schilling Shoulder Issues Trouble Red Sox Nation

Boston hero Curt Schilling, still struggling with shoulder issues, will not be ready for the start of spring training, the Boston Globe reported on its Web site, citing sources with direct knowledge of the situation.

Furthermore, Schilling is engaged in a dispute with the team over whether he needs surgery. The Red Sox, according to the report, even went so far as to try to void the pitcher's $8 million contract for 2008.

Schilling's current shoulder problems are more serious than the ones that sidelined him for over a month last summer, the newspaper reported. His availability for the start of the season is already in question, and surgery would put his availability for the entire year in doubt.

According to the Globe, Schilling's doctor has recommended surgery, while the club wants him to pursue an alternate course. The newspaper did not speculate specifically as to what that other course would be.

In response to an e-mail from the Globe seeking comment, Schilling replied, "I cannot comment right now on any of this, sorry!" Red Sox GM Theo Epstein gave a "no comment" reply when contacted.

After an 86-year title drought, the Red Sox have won two of the last four World Series. Schilling played the hero in Boston's 2004 title run, pitching a dominant Game 6 of the ALCS against the Yankees in the now-famous "Bloody Sock" game.

If The Shoulder Issues are as serious as what the reports are saying, Curt Schilling should retire. If his 2008 Season is in doubt, he should just retire, especially when he said 2008 would be his last season anyway.
